When I was a girl in France, I discovered Mati Caspi’s songs, which became the threads that wove my connections to Eretz Yisrael. His words were the first ones in modern Hebrew that I wanted to understand, and his melodies charmed me — and stay with me even now.
“How can it be that one lone star dares … how does it dare, for God’s sake? One lone star. I wouldn’t dare. And actually, I’m not alone …” The late Mati Caspi set to music and sang the words of Natan Zach, forming a powerful prayer for me. The image of the single star in the dark sky that overcomes the feeling of loneliness was helpful to me in moments of doubt, fear, and grappling with decisions.
We have bid farewell to a rare creative artist who has left us a treasure of words and melodies — sources of resilience in difficult times. May we succeed, in times of darkness and gloom, to dare always to spread our modest, true light and to recall that we are not alone.
Mati, rest in peace. Your songs, like stars, will light our path.
