Aliyah
Committee, AMTON Newsletter Spring 2004
JTA
(Jewish Telegraphic Agency) reports that in a recent interview,
Sallai Meridor, Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel,
informed that aliyah from North America jumped from 1500 in
2001 to 2400 in 2003. He feels that North American Jews are
starting to see aliyah as a realistic idea and therefore the
Jewish Agency is increasing its budget to help olim
from North America. He acknowledges that getting North American
Jews to move to Israel is a great challenge but he feels that
"such immigrants are of special value to the Jewish
state because of their democratic values and economic know-how..."
Plans are underway to increase help for North American immigrants
once they land in Israel by creating stronger support systems
between veterans and newcomers from North America.
