Aliyah
Committee, AMTON Newsletter Spring 2004
Aliyah
on the Agenda...
To
meet the renewed interest in aliyah from our Conservative
Jewish community and to effectively promote the message, as
indicated in Michael Landsberg's call, the Conservative Movement,
under the aegis of MERCAZ USA, has reconvened the Aliyah Committee.
Under the leadership of its Chair, Elana Gershen Finkelstein,
and with representatives from the various arms of our Movement,
the Aliyah Committee's goal is to strengthen the connection
with Israel and increase awareness about the realities of
aliyah.
To
that end, the Aliyah Committee co-sponsored with MERCAZ USA
a Yom Iyun on "The Place of Zionism in the Conservative
Movement" and participated, along with MERCAZ, the Jewish
Agency, the Israel Aliyah Center and Project Reconnect, in
the new "Masorti Aliyah Promotion Speaking Tours".
These short-term shlichuyot bring former Americans
who are now involved with the Masorti Movement back to the
United States to speak on behalf of Israel and aliyah. Last
December, Neil Eisenstadt (originally from Schenectady and
now of Ramat Yishai) visited New York and Chicago, and last
month Edie Ilan (originally from Columbus and now of Raanana)
toured New York, Cleveland, Detroit, Columbus and Pittsburgh.
The next aliyah-promotion speaking tour is planned for November
in Baltimore/Washington area with Charlie Kalech (originally
from New Jersey and now of Jerusalem).
The
Aliyah Committee is committed to working with the various
arms of the Conservative Movement to focus atten-tion on aliyah
from within our Movement. If you are interested in being involved
with activities of the Aliyah Committee, please contact Elana
Gershen Finkelstein at 212-533-7800, ext. 2020.
