MERCAZ USA Newsletter — Summer 2008Essay Contest To Explore Israel's Past & Future Every two years, MERCAZ USA, MERCAZ-Canada and Women's League for Conservative Judaism have sponsored an essay contest for Conservative Movement-affiliated teenagers to win scholarships to participate on trips and study programs to Israel. In the last few years, topics for the biennial competition have ranged from considering Israel as a Jewish State or a "state of all its citizens", to evaluating the legacy of Theodore Herzl and to analyzing Israel and Israelis as reflected in modern Israeli literature. This year, as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of Israel, our essay topic is "Israel at 60: Achievements and Challenges". Participants are being called upon to select and evaluate one achievement that Israel has accomplished over the past sixty years and one challenge facing Israel today that needs to be resolved. The 500-word essays are to be received by MERCAZ USA, 820 Second Avenue, 10th floor, New York, NY 10017-4504, postmarked no later than September 25th, 2008. Click here for the official entry form which must accompany the typed and double-spaced essays. The announcement of the winning essays for the five scholarships, ranging from $250 to $1,000 and applicable to Conservative Movement-sponsored trips to Israel, will take place during the course of the biennial Women's League convention, November 9-12, 2008.
