To Dr. Alon Tal, a leading Israeli environmentalist, founder of the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies and the Israel Union for Environmental Defense and one of three MERCAZ representatives on the Jewish National Fund-Keren Kayemet Le’Yisrael Board, who was the recipient earlier this year of the prestigious $100,000 Charles Bronfman Prize awarded to outstanding young Jewish humanitarians. Tal, a member of the Masorti community of Maccabim who grew up in a Conservative home in North Carolina and immigrated to Israel at the age of 20, was praised at the award ceremony as an “outstanding environmental visionary who set out to change the world and has done so.”
