Zionist Elections Cancelled for WZO Congress

Amidst the anticipation that the elections to select the 145 members of the American Zionist Movement for the World Zionist Congress would start by February 1st, the Zionist Supreme Court in January overruled the WZO's Attorney-General Amos Hausner and upheld the validity of the decision of the U.S. Area Election Committee to field a consensus slate to the 36th World Zionist Congress.

The agreement, which was passed with a 65% vote among the various American Zionist organizations, calls for representation to be distributed among the different Zionist parties at the same level as they enjoyed at the last Zionist Congress in 2006, with the exception of the 3 mandates that had belonged to the American Friends of Likud.

Because of that party's refusal to pay since 2006 its annual dues to the American Zionist Movement, its mandates were forfeited and were redistributed to three parties that had the largest "fractions" in the 2006 elections: ARZA (the Association of Reform Zionists of America), RAJI (Russian American Jews for Israel) and MERCAZ USA. As a result, MERCAZ will be sending 33 delegates, up from 32, and a like number of alternate delegates to the 37th Congress taking place in Jerusalem, June 15th-17th.
